I didn't have any bar stock on hand of the diameter I needed. So I inserted a 1/4' bar inside of a tube, welded the two together and ground the ends off to make them look like they were made from bar stock. Wrapping 1/8" fill rod material around the outer tube, I cut them into pcs. to make the eye lids. Finally tack welding these into position.

Someone, who shall remain nameless, was on facebook and clicked on the Scan for virus button that popped up and my computer has been down till today. It replaces the search engine with its malware. After a professional spent 3 hours running different programs, he finally cleaned up my computer. Don't click on anything is the lesson here!

60 grit flap wheel. I took this picture outside hoping there would be a little more light from the sun. There was a big black cloud at the time though, looks like a big heart on a beach.

4.5" 40 grit flap wheel on a right angle grinder.

The welds caused a little warping, but not as much as I feared. I was able to pound the material back to shape from underneath.

Now to weld off and grind and grind and then grind some more.

The top right corner off the heart will be covered by the chefs hat so there's no need to complete the shaping in this area.

As you can see, I still have to weld off all the joints. My hope is to minimize heat warpage by tacking all the pieces together thus giving the metal less area to expand

Even though I shape each part on an anvil as close as possible, in this tight curve I need a little help using Vise grip pliers, tack welding between.

After all the pieces are in place, I will finish welding each butt joint.

After each piece is tacked, I grind the tack down and use body working tools to smooth the joint between pieces.

Now I start working the pieces to a more convex shape a little at a time. Each piece is 3 to 4 inches wide.

Connecting to the outside ring, the first piece on the lower left of this picture is concave.

I used 1/4" round stainless bar stock to give me the desired height from the table. The bottom and top halves are slightly convex.

These pieces were shaped on an anvil. Welded from behind because the material doesn't wrap all the way around. Since the back will be up against rock above a fireplace, a shaped piece will be added behind after welding.

Steve and Deb Bentz, Owners of Mayfly Lodge, located in Vernon County in southwest Wisconsin, asked me to build a replica of their lodge logo, a Mayfly.

Although a challenge, I accecpted. It just has to be BIG. Maximum length, 63".

I will combine mild steel, 18 guage sheet and stainless steel.

My buddy Tim made this awesome pulling tractor for his son Lane.

I shaped the hood, fuel tank and some other items not seen.

They received First Place in his division at our Radcliffe 2009 Car Show.

This mirror is 48" long and 12" wide.
1.5" x 1.5" steel frame with 1/2" round accents.

A lot of rain today, I added salt whenever it momentarily quit raining. I'm fixing the deer in the background for someone. I think I'll make one in the same style, only I'll make it Iowa size - corn fed.

1 day of rusting. At this point, I've gone thru 2.5 gallons of bleach and 1 salt container. The quantities of each will get smaller and smaller as the rusting progresses. The eyes are covered with black tape, they will be painted gloss black later.
You can see where the pieces are welded together, because the weld material rusts a little faster than the base metal

Sitting on a 4' x 4' table, this antler looks very big and it is.

Using the wire welder, I ran quick beads on the antler for texture.

Working my way down the neck. On a normal moose mount, the neck would include the bulging breast bone and beginnings of the front leg joints. Due to the weight that would be extended out even further from the mounting backet, I've decided to stop the neck at about half its length.

Making the transition from the head to the neck with hand tools can be difficult. I use the clamps to hold the new part to the one already in place. Starting with tack welds near the bottom, I determine where additional trimming is needed and work my way up.

He's getting a little bigger now. A buddy of mine had some steel post caps, 2.5" left over from a project and will work great for the eyes. Today I will make the transition to the neck.

1/2" round solid bar is heated and wrapped around a 2 1/2" pipe. Look, don't touch.

The wrapped bar is removed from the pipe and cut into sections and welded to the eyes, fence post caps, (hemispheres).

Pieces are shaped around the eyes and tacked in place. After the welds are ground off, I'll hammer some details around the eyes.

1/2" round solid bar stock is used to outline the shape of the lower lip.

A center strip, 3" wide, is shaped to the desired profile.

After hammering and edge grinding, the final pieces are tacked in place.

Here you can see the front lip before and after grinding. After the welds are smoothed down, I use auto body tools to further shape and blend the individual pieces together

After the lower nostil is tacked, I weld all the gaps and grind to a smooth finish. More 1/2" bar is used to form the upper lip edge. These pieces are longer than they need to be, easier to cut off extra, than reweld and grind more material into place.

Starting with a 4' x 10' 18 ga. cold roll steel. Cut into 3 pieces for easier handling. I use a plasma torch to cut the steel, you can see the vise gripped cutting guide. A plasma torch cuts at 25,000 degrees F.
